Game for Freedom

Project overview

"Cartas por la Libertad" is a creative, educational project by Yoalli Quetzal Alfaro Tejero, with graphic design by Alexandra Salas. The project explores how art — inspired by the Theatre of the Oppressed — can help communities recognize, reflect on, and act against different forms of oppression.

The game includes 15 game cards, 1 instruction card, and 2 post-game reflection cards. Each card features bold, high-contrast visuals with double meanings, designed to spark storytelling, critical dialogue, and emotional awareness about real experiences of freedom, vulnerability, and social injustice.

Through collective play and dialogue, participants uncover hidden structures of oppression and explore pathways toward liberation and solidarity.

Process & Design Tools

Main target audience

Game for Freedom (Juego por la Libertad) is intended for educators, activists, artists, community organizers, and anyone interested in social justice and participatory learning.

It offers a creative, interactive tool for exploring oppression, empowerment, and collective action through art.

Typography

For the interior text of the cards, the font JMH Typewriter Regular was selected. This typewriter-style font reinforces the themes of resistance, urgency, and authenticity, giving the game a raw and impactful visual tone.

The visual moodboard

To create Game for Freedom (Juego por la Libertad), I explored visual references focused on high-contrast compositions, figure-ground relationships, and symbolic imagery.

These references informed the style of the cards, while the final design brings a unique and original interpretation to the project.

Final artwork

Game for Freedom (Cartas por la Libertad) is a completed educational and artistic card game consisting of 15 game cards, 1 instruction card, and 2 post-game reflection cards.

The final design uses strong visual contrasts (red, black, white, yellow) and figure-ground illustrations to create images with double meanings, inviting players to reflect on experiences of freedom, oppression, and collective resistance.

Through a balance of critical content and impactful visuals, the game offers an engaging, participatory tool for social justice education. It is currently ready to be used in workshops, classrooms, and community spaces.
